  A smile is a big part of who we are, how we feel about ourselves and how others perceive us. Studies show that people with healthy, straight teeth are treated better in social situations than people with crooked teeth. Crooked teeth are difficult to brush properly, which may cause not only tooth decay but also contribute to gum disease and tooth loss. Straight and evenly spaced teeth are easier to clean, resulting in healthier mouths. Properly aligned teeth chew more efficiently, which helps digestion of food and prevents tooth wear. Braces will improve your smile giving you the confidence you need.

  Invisalign is a set of bespoke, clear, plastic, removable aligners which will move your teeth in small increments. Very aesthetic alternative to conventional braces, most people will not realise you are under orthodontic treatment. Because aligners are removable you can brush and floss your teeth normally unlike with conventional braces.

  Orthodontic treatment corrects a malocclusion, or bad bite. In the perfect mouth, the teeth are straight with top front teeth extending over the lower teeth slightly and the back teeth meeting. But many mouths do not meet this ideal.

  There are tree basic types of malocclusion:

  • Class I, where the teeth are crooked, crowded or turned, this presents not only an aesthetic issue, but also difficulties with brushing teeth properly, which in turn may lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Class II, where the upper teeth stick out too far forward and the lower teeth may be positioned too far back. This may cause your child to feel self-conscious about his\her appearance, and teeth, which stick out, are more prone to trauma because they are not protected by lips.
  • Class III, where the lower teeth may be too far forward and the upper teeth too far back, this poses an aesthetic as well as a chewing problem.

  Any one of the mentioned malocclusions may exist together with:

  • Crossbite: upper teeth do not meet lower teeth when closed, but close either inside or outside them, leading to problems with chewing as well as uneven tooth wear.
  • Openbite: front teeth remain apart even when the back teeth are closed; this can lead to problems with chewing food or speech, and may contribute to a lisp.
  • Deep overbite: upper front teeth cover most of the lower front teeth, and the lower front teeth may bite into the roof of the mouth.

  Deep over bites or severe under bites can be very damaging. The front teeth may be fairly straight and the child’s appearance may not be affected, parents may think there is nothing to worry about; however, neglected overbites will trigger excessive tooth wear, causing teeth to become so thin, they will chip and disintegrate.

  What causes a malocclusion?

  Malocclusions are caused by hereditary factors, or by bad habits such as tongue thrusting, thumb sucking or a prolonged sucking of a soother. It is generally advised that children stop sucking a soother after the eruption of all of their baby teeth. While we cannot control genetics and its contribution to a formation of an improper bite, we can control one significant factor that leads to development of a malocclusion -premature loss of baby teeth. When baby teeth are removed too early, usually as a result of decay, our jaws do not develop properly, existing teeth move, causing loss of space, which in turn causes our teeth to become crowded, crooked or impacted (prevented from erupting). Braces can correct most malocclusions. But it is very important that patients realize that using braces to move teeth is a biological process, which cannot be hastened. Our teeth are held in bone, and in order for them to move, bone must dissolve on one side of the tooth, and it must be formed on the other side of the tooth. If that process is done too quickly (six months braces) teeth may become loose and damaged.

  Dental implants

  Implant dentistry is the most advanced therapy available to replace missing teeth. They are often the preferred way to replace a single tooth. They consist of two parts: a titanium screw and a crown (or cap). The titanium screw fuses to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. After the healing process, the screw becomes part of your jaw, creating an anchor for the crown. This gives your implant the strength of a healthy, natural tooth. After the healing process, the implant is restored with a crown.

  Cleaning:

  Regular hygiene treatments can help you maintain a healthy mouth. Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to tooth decay and periodontal disease. A routine cleaning also known as scale and polish removes the plaque and tartar deposits. It should be performed twice a year.

  Fillings:

  When your tooth is decayed and requires a filling, you will not have any symptoms. That is why it is very important to attend for dental check ups. When your tooth begins to hurt you, in most cases it is too late for a filling. Tooth colored fillings are known as composite. 
Composite are bonded to the tooth and set with a dental light. Composites are ideal for repairing small cavities and replacing defective silver 
fillings.

  Inlays and Onlays:

  In a situation when there is insufficient tooth structure to support a composite filling an inlay or onlay must be complete. Inlays and onlays are
 usually made of porcelain which is stronger than a regular filling. They 
provide greater strength and support for long term function and allow the dentist to use a minimally invasive technique to provide the highest standard of care.

  Crown:

  When a tooth has become structurally compromised or after a root canal treatment a crown is required.
 A crown covers the entire toot and is usually made out of porcelain.

  Bridge:

  If you are missing one or more teeth and an implant is not possible a bridge can be completed to replace the missing 
tooth. A bridge consists of multiple crowns fused together. It is usually cemented to your natural teeth on either side of the missing tooth. A bridge, just like a single crown will look and function like a natural tooth.
